#BREAKFREE is a movement we participated in to help break free from stereotypes. In the process of creating products that'll interest and motivate viewers, we included: race, religion, gender roles, self image, immigration, and more.
In class to have a stronger view on these topics, we did an activity where we silently walked around our class and wrote on papers-labeled, "Black", "White", "Mexican", and "Asian"-terms that we have heard that were/are affiliated with that specific race.
Also, we read a book called Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do by Claude M. Steele. In this book, there is a young black male who walks down the street and because of the color of his skin, is avoided by many people. When he starts whistling a classical song, people are immediately intrigued and feel less threatened so they start to be a little more casual. This slight interaction just goes to show that certain actions prove people who assume bad things, wrong.
